You2.0 Edition #3: Stop Running from the Rubber Mask
Ever watched an episode of Scooby-Doo? It’s always the same script: the gang is chased through a creepy amusement park by a glowing space kook or a swamp monster. They’re terrified. They’re running for their lives. But when they finally corner the beast and pull off the mask, what do they find?
It’s just Old Man Jenkins, the regular guy from the bait shop, standing there in a cheap disguise.
That is exactly what Imposter Syndrome is. It is a fear monster pretending to be real. It’s that nagging feeling that you’re a total fraud, sapping your confidnece, even when you’ve clearly earned your seat at the table. You tell yourself you "just got lucky" or that you don't belong here.
It's the whispered lie of your negative self-talk saying you'll be judged and rejected for attempting the thing that is in front of you.
Here’s the reality check: Research shows that up to 82% of people feel this way at some point. It thrives most when you are in a season of growth and change. If you feel like an imposter, it’s usually because you’re actually doing something big enough to be scary and impactful.
The Move: Unmasking the Monster
To stop running, we have to investigate the fear and gather the evidence. We’re pulling off the mask with these three strategies:
Document Your Wins: Stop relying on your memory—it’s biased toward your mistakes. Keep a "Wins Journal" that tracks your achievements, compliments, and moments of growth.
Reframe Fear as Growth: Feeling uncomfortable doesn't mean you’re unqualified; it means you’re expanding. When the "monster" shows up, it’s just a sign that you’re playing a bigger game. When I feel what some cal anxiousness about an opportunity in front of me, I just say out loud "I have a lot of unused energy right now. I'm about to put it to good use." There's nothing wrong, you're body is just getting ready to do someting extraordinary.
Challenge the Negative Draft: When your brain says "I don't belong," pull out the Red Pen and rewrite it: "I was chosen for a reason".
